Mystery Unfolds at SCG: Gavaskar Raises Eyebrows Over Dodgy Pitch in Australia-India Test Thriller

Sunil Gavaskar has expressed concerns over the state of the pitch at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) during the Australia-India Test match, describing it as “not ideal” after an unusually high number of wickets fell in just the first two days. With 26 wickets already taken, the match seems likely to conclude well before the traditional five-day period, particularly highlighting a sharp contrast to other Test matches that stretch to their final hours.

Gavaskar commented that had a similar scenario unfolded in India, it would have attracted considerable criticism. He suggested that former cricketers from countries like England and Australia often voice discontent over subcontinental pitches but apply a different standard when fast bowlers dominate on their turf.

India, currently trailing in their second innings, saw only debutant Beau Webster and Rishabh Pant reach beyond 50 runs. With key player Jasprit Bumrah affected by back spasms, India’s performance is further hindered. Gavaskar remarked that while the pitch has created an engaging contest, the balance is skewed, as such conditions are rarely criticized when outside India.

Reflecting on previous experiences, Gavaskar insisted that Indian players expect difficulties abroad and don’t indulge in complaints, unlike their western counterparts. Former player Aakash Chopra also contrasted the differences between spinning pitches and those favoring seamers, arguing that surfaces should offer equitable challenges throughout a match rather than deteriorating quickly.

The current scenario leaves India needing a victory in this final Test to even the series against Australia, with the chance to retain the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the balance.
