Severe weather conditions have disrupted ferry operations across the Cook Strait, leaving passengers anxious and causing the cancellation of numerous New Year’s Eve sailings. Two sailings by Interislander and six by Bluebridge were called off due to a strong southerly swell. Those who managed to make the crossing reported a rough journey, with several passengers experiencing seasickness.
Among the travelers, Charlotte from Masterton expressed apprehension over her family’s first trip to the South Island. Though looked after well by ferry staff, her twins were both excited and worried about the potentially turbulent ride to their destination in Tākaka.
German tourist Rudi, who is biking around the South Island, appeared unfazed by the rough conditions, having had previous experiences on ferries. Spaniard Gonzalo decided to proceed with his journey to Picton, despite the adverse weather, as it was his sole opportunity to visit New Zealand.
On hand to help passengers cope, entertainer Siofra Martin prepared to provide onboard distractions for children and tips for dealing with seasickness. The ferry company advised travelers to avoid certain foods and alcohol before their journey to minimize discomfort and suggested remedies such as ginger and seabands to combat motion sickness.
The challenging weather exemplifies the unpredictability of New Zealand’s climates, impacting travel plans during the holiday season. Passengers are advised to stay informed and prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions when planning their journeys across the Cook Strait.
