Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, known as the “Special Ks,” were forced to retire from their anticipated men’s doubles match at the Australian Open due to persistent injuries. Despite their determination to put on a show at Melbourne Park, their attempt was cut short after just one and a half sets. Kyrgios was treated for an abdominal strain, while Kokkinakis struggled with a pectoral injury that impacted his ability to serve, leading to their early exit.

Following a gruelling five-set singles match against Jack Draper, Kokkinakis expressed doubts about his ability to compete, citing “physical torture” from his recurring injury. “The doctor advised me not to play. I can’t serve, can’t hit a high forehand. I’m in a lot of pain,” he admitted, yet his desire to team up with Kyrgios pushed him to give it a try. Kokkinakis acknowledged the risk of exacerbating his injury, saying, “I’m going to have to miss some time after the Aussie Open, but I told my team that I’ll empty the tank and see what I’ve got.”

Kyrgios, who has also been grappling with injuries, hinted at a possible end to his singles career at the Australian Open but left the door open for future doubles participation with Kokkinakis. He emphasized their synergy on the court, remarking, “On full potential and full health, we could do some damage in the doubles.”

Their departure raises questions about the direction of their careers, with Kokkinakis considering surgery and Kyrgios contemplating his competitive future. Despite the setback, the duo remains hopeful about playing together again, driven by their undeniable connection and chemistry on the court.

Meanwhile, Australian duo Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth advanced to the next round of men’s doubles. Vukic, who is also through to the singles third round, committed to continuing his participation, demonstrating the resolve prevalent among Australian players despite the challenges faced at this year’s tournament.
