Mystery Deepens: Why Has the MV Maccoa Been Stranded in the St. Lawrence River for Days?

21

An operation to remove cargo from a ship grounded in the St. Lawrence River, northeast of Montreal, has been delayed until the weekend. The ship, MV Maccoa, ran aground near Verchères, Quebec, in the early hours of December 24, following a power failure. Attempts to refloat the Cyprus-flagged 185-meter bulk carrier have been unsuccessful so far. The plan to begin off-loading more than 3,000 metric tonnes of corn on Thursday has been postponed, as the necessary barges for transporting the cargo are still being prepared and have not arrived. Twenty crew members remain on board, although the ship is reported to be in stable condition.
