Mysterious Voyage: Indigenous Icons Set to Launch Secrets to the Moon—What Are They Leaving Behind?

Ashley Callingbull, renowned for being the first Indigenous Miss Universe Canada, is embarking on an extraordinary mission beyond Earth. Partnering with Dine-Cree designer Stephanie Eagletail, Callingbull is involved in Project Lunar Codex, which aims to send cultural artifacts, including miniaturized images of Callingbull modeling Eagletail’s designs, to the moon in January 2025 aboard a NASA space capsule.

The project represents a significant opportunity to showcase Indigenous culture on a cosmic scale. Callingbull expressed amazement at the endeavor, emphasizing the pride in seeing their culture represented among the stars. Similarly, Eagletail views this initiative as a tribute to Indigenous creativity and resilience, inspired by her great-grandmothers.

Included in the Lunar Codex are works by esteemed Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau, although his legacy has recently been tarnished by issues of forgery. Both Callingbull and Eagletail are committed to raising awareness about these challenges and advocating for the appreciation of authentic Indigenous voices. They aim to take Morrisseau’s story on tour, promoting genuine Indigenous art and stories. The duo also seeks support from Canadians, including financial backing, to help preserve Morrisseau’s legacy and amplify Indigenous achievements both on Earth and beyond.
