A sombre gathering unfolded in central Nelson as thousands united to honor the late Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming. The community, deeply affected by the tragedy, assembled at the steps of Christ Church Cathedral in Trafalgar Square. The streets were filled with mourners, including a contingent of police officers paying tribute to their fallen colleague.

Fleming tragically passed away after being struck by a vehicle while with Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsey, who remains hospitalized in a serious but stable condition. A 32-year-old man is facing multiple charges, including murder, in connection with the incident.

Local organizer Shelley Bishop, who felt compelled to act despite having never met Fleming, shared the profound grief echoing through the community. Bishop facilitated a vigil featuring a bagpiper and a rendition of ‘Amazing Grace,’ with locals contributing candles and blue ribbons as symbols of remembrance.

The Nelson City Council coordinated traffic management for the event, while local officials encouraged residents who could not attend to display blue ribbons at their homes as a gesture of solidarity.

MP Rachel Boyack acknowledged the deep impact Fleming’s death has had and emphasized the importance of opportunities for collective mourning. While acknowledging the grim start to the year, she highlighted Nelson’s resilient community spirit, hoping the vigil would serve as a step toward healing.

Nelson’s vigil stands as a poignant reflection of the region’s grief and respect for a cherished police officer, remembered fondly as a leader, dedicated to her community and sports, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives during her 38-year career.

The memory of Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming continues to evoke support from across New Zealand, as people come together to honor her life and legacy.
