The 19-year-old had a slow start at Thursday’s game, and struggled to make contact with serves. However, when she broke her opponent and took a 4-2 lead in set three, it was very clear Fernandez she wasn’t going down that easy.

Sabalenka made 52 errors compared to Fernandez’s 23 and double faulted twice in the final match, setting up match point, which translated into a win for Fernandez.

Fernandez might just be the second Canadian to score the women’s single after Mississauga’s Biance Andreescu, who won the title in 2019.

She is scheduled to face either Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu or Greek Maria Sakkari.
