The mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, has declared a state of emergency for the Montreal Island with a significant increase in water levels expected by Sunday.
Among other things, this gives the City the power to purchase additional equipment for disaster victims without going through the Executive Committee of the City of Montreal.
The City also has the power to take possession of land such as parking lots of shopping centers with the purpose of depositing equipment for disaster victims.
The state of emergency gives especially the power to force evacuations if necessary if the City considers that the situation becomes dangerous for some citizens. The goal is to make sure no one is in danger.
