Medicom Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and distributors of high-quality infection control, single-use and preventive products.
While Medicom’s head office, located in Pointe-Claire, they will be opening their first Montreal manufacturing facility in St. Laurent this July.
The mandate of the facility is to produce tens of millions of N95 and surgical masks. This will create 33 new jobs in the medical manufacturing sector.
“The idea is to develop supply chain sovereignty,” said Guillaume Laverdure, Medicom President and Global Chief Operating Officer in an interview with the West Island Blog. “The idea outlined by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is to have a flow of products in the region, making Canada less dependent on imports.”
According to Laverdure, this is not the first facility in Canada.
“We had a highly specialized facility in Granby, Quebec, but had to close it last year, the competition in China made it impossible to remain open.”
Currently, Medicom imports the majority of their medical supplies from their three factories in China. They also have plants in Taiwan, France and the United States.
François Legault, Premier of Quebec, Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of the Economy and Innovation, and Danielle McCann, Minister of Health and Social Services, have announced that the Quebec Government is supporting this investment through Investissement Québec to accelerate the establishment of the plant, which will supply both N95 type masks and ASTM Level 3 surgical masks.
“We import millions and millions of masks from China, but since the pandemic, we have seen regulations changing almost weekly, making the process complicated, but we manage. Regulations in France have made importing impossible.”
“We do produce N95 masks in France, but we are not permitted to export at the moment,” he explained. “China has been on lockdown for a couple of months, so we didn’t export in April at all but are able to now.”
“We are very proud to be a Quebec-based company with roots in the West Island. The West Island is dear to our hearts,” said Laverdure.
“Medicom has been a trusted name in personal protective equipment for over three decades,” said Guillaume Laverdure, Medicom President and Global Chief Operating Officer. “We are happy to have reached an agreement with the Canadian Government to be their long-term supplier for N95-type and surgical face masks and to facilitate our investment for local production. Diversified supply has been a long-term strategy for us at Medicom and we are happy to be adding a Canadian facility to help supply products that will help protect Canadian healthcare professionals and patients.”
