In the neon haze of Las Vegas at the CinemaCon conference, some of Hollywood’s heavy hitters turned the spotlight on their upcoming ventures that promise to redefine cinema. Margot Robbie, the accomplished actress, and producer behind the 2023 box office hit “Barbie,” revealed she’s got another iconic toy in sight — Monopoly.
Backed by Hasbro and Lionsgate, Robbie’s production company LuckyChap is now setting its sights on transforming the cherished family board game into a motion picture. Still basking in the afterglow of the remarkable success of the “Barbie” film, which earned more than $1.4 billion in ticket sales across the globe, Robbie and her team are determined to bring their distinctive vision to this classic board game.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate is also gearing up to resurrect the spine-chilling saga of “The Blair Witch Project” under the skillful guidance of the horror maestros at Blumhouse. This will kickstart a multiple-year collaboration between Lionsgate and Jason Blum’s company, seeking to dial up the horror quotient by drawing on an array of titles from the studio’s vast library.
The original “Blair Witch” film was released in 1999 sending seismic ripples through the box office, earning $248 million and altering the future discourse of horror movies. Jason Blum extolled the phenomenal impact of ‘The Blair Witch Project,’ citing it as the genesis of the found-footage horror, which it deftly synthesized and popularized among mainstream audiences.
On the success ladder, Lionsgate had a prosperous 2023, with films like “John Wick 4,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and “Saw X” and is brimming with optimism about its future slate of theatrical releases. The roster includes the much-anticipated “Borderlands,” Eli Roth’s innovative adaptation of the crowd-favored video game series, scheduled to hit the theatres in August!
Roth and Ariana Greenblatt, part of the stellar ensemble cast, which includes the likes of Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, and Jamie Lee Curtis, expressed their elation while recounting their experience of working on “Borderlands”. Despite being overshadowed by prolonged issues and delays, the duo painted a vibrant panorama of their fun-filled, affectionate, and off-kilter family dynamic on set.
A dash of drama is also in the works at Lionsgate with a new rendition of “The Crow,” set to open in theaters on Aug. 23. Directed by “Snow White and the Huntsman” helmer Rupert Sanders, with Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs in the lead roles, it’s a reinterpretation of the original film, steeped in tragedy due to the accidental death of its star, Brandon Lee.
The upcoming array also includes a new “Highlander” movie featuring Henry Cavill, a Guy Ritchie action thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal called “In the Grey” set to release in 2025, and Aziz Ansari’s “Good Fortune,” a poignant comedy.
Ansari, who also helms the film and stars alongside Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen, heartily thanked those who preferred attending the Lionsgate event over enjoying the Vegas nightlife, humorously dubbing them the ‘exhibitors’. Seeing the film screen in theaters was Ansari’s dream, a space he believes is ideal for appreciating his big-screen specific comedy.
In a climactic finish to the presentation, audience members were given a sneak peek at Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael.” The film offers an intimate portrayal of the music legend’s public and private life and features 30 of Jackson’s songs and dramatic recreations of his performances.
Lionsgate’s current schedule includes a whole slate of productions such as the Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg’s action-packed “Flight Risk” and “Ballerina,” an explosive John Wick spinoff featuring Ana de Armas out next year, that are certain to keep audiences all around the globe at the edge of their seats.
