In a tragic turn of events, a 35-year-old man who had ensconced himself within an RV in Penetanguishene, during a recent standoff with the police, has succumbed to his injuries. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit unveiled that the man passed away in a hospital due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Last week, Halton Regional Police had approached a property on Laurier Road to carry out search warrants. However, the man repelled their attempts by barricading himself inside an RV, steadfastly refusing to exit. To defuse the escalating situation, the Ontario Provincial Police Tactical Unit were summoned to the scene.
A seasoned negotiator joined forces with the police in this tense standoff that lasted for hours. The law enforcement’s patient strategy included deploying pepper spray into the RV in an effort to draw the man out.
Eventually, the man emerged from the RV, revealing a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was swiftly transported to a hospital for immediate medical attention. According to the SIU, he tragically succumbed to the injury days later.
A postmortem examination will be carried out in Toronto on Wednesday to provide more insights into the incident. Investigation into the unfortunate happening is ongoing, with the special unit inviting anyone with relevant information to reach out via their hotline or online.
