Man Dead, Driver In Custody After Off-Roader Crashes In Southeast B.C

An Alberta resident has died after an off-roader he was in crashed into a large water body, southeast of B.C, last Saturday.

Repones team that included paramedics, search and rescue and police was called to the crash site in Newgate, west of Lake Koocanusa at about 11:50 pm, the RCMP said. The water body straddles the border between the U.S and Canada, southeast of Cranbrook.

Investigators believe the Utility task vehicle had two occupants when it went into the water body. The passenger sustained serious injuries was declared dead at the crash site.

Driver wasn’t hurt, but police took him into custody. Alcohol is said to be a major contributing factor in the accident, a police statement said.

The driver will be arraigned at the Fernie provincial court, B.C. Police said they are still investigating the crash.
