Maine Casinos Reopen and Enhance Security Measures After Nearby Tragedy

The doors of Maine’s two renowned gaming properties have once again burst open following an overnight closure precipitated by a neighboring mass shooting. The victims of the tragic Maine incident included Billy Brackett, Joshua Seal, and Steven Vozzella.

Visitors at the Oxford Casino Hotel will be greeted by a reopened gaming floor from 11 a.m. Saturday. Casino representatives have urged guests to continue to exercise caution during their visit. As temporary measures go, guests will gain access to the casino through the hotel entrance, with law enforcement officials standing by to maintain safety.

In a bid to uphold standards of hospitality during this period, casino representatives requested, ”please show our Team Members who come into work kindness and patience as some areas may yet be short staffed.” In the aftermath of the opening, the hotel will remain inaccessible until Tuesday.

Simultaneously, Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway Bangor heralded a return to operations around 4 p.m. on Friday, while also enhancing security measures.

The Oxford Casino Hotel, located roughly 14 miles from the Lewiston crime scenes, was the closer of the two establishments to the site of the incident.

Robert Card, the person named as the suspect in the mass shootings, was found deceased in a trailer nearby a Lisbon Falls recycling plant where he was formerly employed. His death was reportedly a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Highlighting the grim aftermath, eighteen individuals died and thirteen others were wounded in the Wednesday night shooting spree. The incidents occurred in two locations in Lewiston, including a bowling alley named Sparetime Recreation and Schemengees Bar and Grill.

In light of the tragic events, local residents were advised to remain indoors, and many opened businesses were forced to close. The status quo seemed to regain some normalcy when authorities lifted restrictions Friday afternoon, urging the public to resume their daily routines after Card’s body was found.

Acknowledging the palpable relief, Lewiston Police Department Chief, David St. Pierre said at a news conference, ” Our community can now breathe a sigh of relief.” Despite the relief, he reminded community members not to forget the pain of grieving families and the tireless effort of law enforcement officials throughout the event.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills gave a heartfelt nod at the same news conference, attributing the discovery of Card’s body to the tireless efforts of hundreds of local, county, state and federal law enforcement members.
