London School Football Team Cancels Game over Hazing Incident Investigation

At Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School (SWLSS) in London, staff and coaches are delving into a serious matter surrounding an “hazing incident” which implicated the Rams senior football team.

On the evening of September 21, 2023, just before the commencement of the Rams’ new season, an uneasy community member alerted the school about an unseemly event transpiring on the playing field.

Reacting proactively to the news, the school began an urgent investigation spearheaded by SWLSS principal, Matt Bradacs. Preliminary findings have pointed to a subset of the football team engaging in demeaning hazing activities – a clear violation of the school’s and school board’s stringent policy against behaviours that belittle any student or student athlete. After uncovering these inauspicious findings, the school took immediate steps to address the issue.

A meeting was held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, merely an hour and a half prior to their United Way game. Team members, alongside Bradacs and the coaches, took the unanimous decision to cancel the game against Catholic Central High School (CCH), disappointing 800 eager student spectators.

Following the incident, a residue of eggshell in the west end zone served as a stark reminder of the previous night’s occurrences. The event involved eggs unforgivingly pelted at hapless players in the end zone.

Adrift in remorse and regret, the players accepted full responsibility for their misguided actions. Principal Bradacs validated that coaches maintained an unaware stance about the event and had no hand in promoting it. He disclosed, “The players took full responsibility and were extremely remorseful.”

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Senior Head Football Coach John Kublinskas expressed profound disappointment, “We are sad and devastated by what happened Thursday evening.” Emphasizing on self-improvement and growth, he added “It’s about how do we get better?”

Such a jarring situation has hit London’s schools for the second time. Earlier, the Catholic Central High team too had to forfeit a match due to a hazing incident, hinting at an alarming trend that needs to be nipped in its bud.

Reiterating this point, Bradacs ascertained that the investigation would continue until they established an appropriate course of action and consequent punishment. Meanwhile, the focus will rest on education and imbuing better values in the team.

As the team gears up to move past this incident, it is important to emphasize on the repercussions of hazing and of forgetting that ultimately, the sport is for fostering happy, healthy relations and memories that last a lifetime. And at the end of the day, for those who might need a break from the traditional field, it might be more suitable to switch gears and experience an exhilarating surge of adrenaline in the comfort of your own homes.
