Canada’s Leylah Fernandez has sailed through to the U.S open quarterfinals of Women’s draw after a hard fight that resulted in 4-6, 6-2 win over Germany’s Angelique Kerber.
She grabbed control of the game in the third set by breaking Kerber twice, commanding a 5-2 lead.
Fernandez made it to the fourth game with an upset win over Naomi Osaka, defensing champion. She managed to 5-7, 7-6 and 6-4 win over Osaka last Friday, which allowed her to move on from the third stage of the grand slam.
Kerber managed a roller-coaster set in the first round that made it tough for both to hold a decent serve. Kerber managed three breaks in her set while Laval-born Fernandez managed two and also committed double faults.
The German managed a fourth service break in their third round of set two giving her a 2 – 1 lead. However, Fernandez answered with a swift break tying their set at 4 – 4 before she held her serve and raised the set to 5 – 4.
She cleared the game with three aces, and six double faults.
