Laval Residents Warned Against Tap Water Use After Damaging Fire

36

In an urgent precautionary move, Laval officials are strongly advising local residents to refrain from using tap water due to its potential to cause harm to their health. The advisory was prompted by concerns that the area’s water supply may have been tainted during a fire that occurred early Tuesday morning, leading to the displacement of four families.

Originating in the rear of a home on Lynne Street at approximately 5 in the morning, the flames quickly spread to three neighbouring residences. It required the concerted effort of around 40 firefighters to eventually subdue the raging fire.

In its official announcement made on Tuesday afternoon, the city reported that the tap water currently contains contaminants that cannot be eliminated simply by boiling. Exposure to this compromised water may result in conditions such as skin, eye, and nasal irritations. This advisory is specifically relevant to dwellers of the city’s Sainte-Dorothée district.

To ensure the availability of safe drinking water, the Joliburge Community Centre has set up provisions for the residents from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday and from 8 a.m. onwards on Wednesday. Additionally, shower facilities are open for use at the Martin St-Louis and Hartland-Monahan Arenas, accessible up till 11 p.m. on Tuesday, and reopening at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

Four homes underwent substantial damage, and the families residing in them were relocated following the outbreak of the destructive fire in Laval on September 26, 2023.

The official City of Laval posters advised residents experiencing eye irritation to rinse their eyes for up to 20 minutes with lukewarm water from a non-contaminated source. Should the symptoms continue beyond a 45-minute timeframe, they are instructed to immediately contact the poison control centre at 1-800-463-5060. For those experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort, the city’s advice is to resist the urge to vomit, rehydrate using milk or clean water, and get in touch with the poison control centre.
