Australian cricket captain Alyssa Healy has been cleared to play as a wicketkeeper in the Women’s Ashes opener after successfully passing a fitness test on her knee. Healy, who has been dealing with a knee issue for several months, managed to complete 30 minutes of wicketkeeping practice at North Sydney Oval, ensuring her participation in the first One Day International (ODI) against England. Her return to wicketkeeping allows Beth Mooney to remain in the field, strengthening Australia’s defensive lineup. Despite her recent challenges with injuries, Healy expressed enthusiasm about resuming her role behind the stumps. She acknowledged the cautious approach taken in her recovery, emphasizing the importance of proper management to ensure long-term fitness. While she will start the series as wicketkeeper, Healy remains pragmatic about potentially needing to rotate duties given the demanding schedule of the multi-format series. Australia will choose between including fast bowler Darcie Brown or spinner Georgia Wareham for the opening match. The team, facing three ODIs, three T20s, and a Test before February, aims to secure its first Ashes victory under Healy’s leadership, following a series draw in 2023. Healy, a seven-time World Cup winner, is also eyeing success at the 50-over World Cup in India later this year.
