Struggling with a problem? Hold on to that tissue — there might soon be a shortage in Canada.
Known for its iconic brand, Kimberly-Clark, one of the world’s renowned consumer goods company, has announced its definitive exit from the consumer facial tissue business in Canada. The company points to “unique complexities” as the linchpin contributing to this decision, in a recent statement.
From August 2023, the familiar Kleenex consumer facial tissues will no longer be available on Canadian shelves. However, this decision does not affect other Kimberly-Clark products in the Canadian market. This includes, Kleenex professional facial products aimed at the business market, Kleenex consumer hand towel products, and other Kimberly-Clark brands such as Cottonelle, Viva, U by Kotex, Poise, Depend, Huggies, Pull-Ups, and Goodnites.
“Our decision to withdraw from the consumer facial tissue sector in Canada was incredibly strenuous to arrive at,” opines Todd Fisher, the Vice President and General Manager of Kimberly-Clark Canada. “Over the years, we’ve cherished our consumers’ acceptance, welcoming us into their homes. Additionally, our retail partners have been nothing short of supportive,” he added.
Reflecting on the challenges, Fisher noted, “Our operations have been in an exceptionally restrained supply environment. Despite our best intentions and efforts, we’ve met with uncommon intricacies concerning the Kleenex business.”
By stepping back from the consumer facial tissue business in Canada, Kimberly-Clark hopes to redeploy its resources more effectively. The aim is a more focussed attention on its other brands within the Canadian market. The company is confident this decision will allow them to continue meeting consumer needs through sustained innovation and value.
This shift is not unique to Kimberly-Clark. Recently, other well-loved products have also disappeared from the Canadian market. These include Nestle’s Delissio frozen pizza, the treasured Bugles cone-shaped corn snack, and a variety of delightful sweet treats from Little Debbie.
