For the past decade, John Dunleavy has been an integral member of the TD Garden team and the Boston Bruins Foundation, pouring heart and soul into his work. Going on record, he described the last 10 years as the best of his life owing to his association with these stellar teams. A positive beacon of determination and spirit, John, who is blessed with Down syndrome, made his foray into this realm right after high school when the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress extended a helping hand.
Roles and responsibilities? Name it, and John has been there and done that. From carrying out administrative duties diligently to adding flair to community events and even delivering the most inspiring pep talks to the Bruins alumni team, John has done it all. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I take immense pleasure in giving back to the community. It’s a feeling beyond expressible words.”
A remembered rendezvous with Bob Sweeney, the ex-Bruin and standing president of the Bruins Foundation, changed the trajectory of John’s life a decade back. Reminiscing, John said, “Meeting Bob was the best thing that happened to me. He was the one who inspired me to come work here.” An unshakeable bond blossomed from that point forward, only growing stronger with each passing day.
Echoing the sentiments, Sweeney affirmed, “John brings a unique energy to our foundation. His perpetual smile is contagious, lighting up the room every time. It’s been an enchanting ten years.”
Working here gave John more than just a job. It birthed a sense of independence, a chance to commute on his own taking the routine rail. This workplace also became a haven of respect, where his contributions were valued, nurturing his sense of belonging.
Raising the bars of camaraderie, his co-workers all rallied behind him during his Special Olympics USA Games training for swimming. The support extended beyond just words, with Sweeney even flying down to Florida to watch him compete.
Drawing from this enriching experience, the duo now advocates the employment of individuals with Down syndrome, outlining their invaluable contribution to the workforce. Sweeney affirmed, “The ‘Your Next Star’ Employment Center by MDSC has created these opportunities, connected employers, and enriched their workforce manifold.”
In a revelation that warmed hearts, John shared he has no plans of hanging up his boots anytime soon. He expressed, “I’m never going to leave. I can see myself working here for the rest of my life.” In the years to come, John will continue to bring his joyful energy to the Bruins alumni game as an honorary coach, a position he cherishes deeply.
