A pet food manufacturer in Oregon has issued a voluntary recall after a house cat died from bird flu, which was linked to their products. The implicated batch, sold under the label Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food, tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus and was distributed in British Columbia, California, Colorado, and Washington.
Northwest Naturals, based in Portland, has urged consumers to dispose of products from the affected batch, packaged in two-pound bags with best-before dates from May 21, 2026, to June 23, 2026. The warning follows confirmation from the Oregon Department of Agriculture that the virus, H5N1, infected a cat in Washington County, resulting in its death after consuming the brand’s raw frozen pet food.
Dr. Ryan Scholz from the Oregon Department of Agriculture emphasized that the cat, being strictly indoor, likely contracted the virus through the food, underscoring the risks of feeding pets raw meat. No human cases have been linked to this incident. Health Canada has yet to issue an official product recall or comment on the situation.
