Is This the End? Rohit Sharma’s Mysterious Absence Fuels Test Retirement Rumors

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma is expected to announce his retirement from Test cricket following his decision to skip the series finale in Sydney against Australia. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri speculated on this potential retirement during commentary, noting that Sharma’s absence from the team for the Sydney Test, where Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah has stepped in, signals a likely end to his Test career. Rohit, who is 37, had returned to the series after a personal leave but struggled to find form, averaging just 6.2 runs across five innings.

Coach Gautam Gambhir had previously indicated uncertainty regarding Sharma’s place in the team, which led to speculation about his decision to opt out of the final Test. Additionally, India’s next Test match is not scheduled until June on a tour of England, providing a natural pause in Sharma’s cricketing calendar.

Rohit debuted in 2013 and has since played 67 Tests, amassing an average of 40.57 with 12 centuries. However, his recent performance had been under scrutiny, having failed to score any centuries during four tours of Australia. As other Indian players like Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant also face challenges in performance, the focus on Sharma’s retirement underscores a period of transition for the Indian cricket team.
