Hudson Players Club presents William Shakespeare’s timeless love story and tragedy, Romeo & Juliet from July 13-22. In continuing their popular Shakespeare By The Lake series, Hudson Players Club will bring the Bard back to the outdoor amphitheatre at Jack Layton Park in Hudson this summer. Previous Shakespeare By The Lake productions include As You Like It (2014), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2015) and For The Love Of Shakespeare (2016).

“It is truly magical to experience Shakespeare while sitting under the open sky with trees and water all around. People of all ages are guaranteed to have an incredible evening of theatre!”, says Hudson Players Club member and former president, Diana Gausden, who also has the role of Nurse in the show.

The director this year is Sophie Gee, whose previous directing credits include, The Phaedra Project (No! I! Don’t! Want! To! Fall! In! Love! With! You!) MAI, Montréal Arts Interculturels, I am such a small container for all this, SEAS Festival, Iceland and Domestik, Eastern Bloc, Montreal.  This production will shake the dust off, banish the rainbows and breath new life into this classic tale of two star-crossed lovers whose forbidden love is caught between their feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets.

On her approach, Sophie Gee says, “Shakespeare uses a lot of light imagery to describe both Romeo and Juliet. I wanted the young people in the play to be bursting with life, light and energy, the complete opposite of death, so that we can feel the absence of that light when Romeo and Juliet commit suicide. I am aiming for this production to be fleshy, sweaty, full of spit and blood, not clean or pretty. There’s a lot of beauty in the play of course, but the ugliness is essential.”

Please come and join us for an evening that promises to be a rollercoaster ride of young love, family feuds and heartbreaking tragedy. Everything you should excpect from Shakespeare!

Performances begin at 7pm: Thursday July 13 to  Saturday July 15 and Wednesday July 19 to July 22. There is a suggested donation of 10$.
