A chilling tragedy unfolded on Tuesday evening in Iroquois Falls when a 24-year-old driver lost control of his truck, turning an ordinary home into a scene of deadly wreckage. Amid the calm that belies any evening, the truck, described as a pickup by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), crashed into a house at approximately 8 p.m. The driver, a resident of Iroquois Falls, was tragically declared deceased at the scene.
“The vehicle made impact with a residential property,” detailed OPP in an official report. Miraculously, all the occupants of the ill-fated house managed to escape without any physical injury following the horrifyng crash.
A close neighbour, Melisa Bowles, described the harrowing sight. As she stood in her yard, she saw a nightmarish spectacle: the pickup truck veered off the highway at an alarmingly high speed, took a terrifying leap mid-air, and crashed into the nearby house. She immediatly called 911, her screams filling the otherwise quiet suburb.
The matriarch of the affected family shared a heart-wrenching account of the narrow escape of her grandkids from the jaws of the destruction, given the truck’s spectacularly high speed when it struck her daughter’s home. She praised her son-in-law’s heroic and swift actions, as he shepherded the children and his wife to safety through a window, moments before the overbearing roof caved in.
“My son-in-law, he truly is a superhero,” declared the tearful Bill Lee, marvelling at his son-in-law’s achievement in protecting his wife and children from the unforeseen disaster. The family stated that although their possessions have been entirely decimated, they are fortunate that no members of the family sustained physical injuries.
The patriarch somberly added how a small change in their daily routine might have been the line between life and death for his grandkids whose bedrooms were impacted directly by the crash. He further lauded his son-in-law’s prompt response and bravery in saving their lives.
According to a later social media post, Highway 67 at Ambridge Drive was closed due to a collision between Highway 11 and Iroquois Falls. The exact reopening time was not disclosed by the OPP, but drivers were directed to use Jacobs Hill Road to the north of the town and Monteith Road to the south. The news of this story will continue to unfold as further information becomes available.
