In the quaint town of Pictou, N.S., law enforcement officials are launching a probe into an unsettling incident of potential hate crime that transpired over the weekend. The offense in question involved the defacement of a Pride flag within the premises of the local educational institution, West Pictou Consolidated School situated in Lyons Brook.
Officers from the local RCMP detachment responded to the report of vandalism within the school precincts on Monday. Upon their arrival, they discovered the remnants of the Pride flag, previously displayed in all its colorful glory, now torn asunder. The act of hate didn’t stop at desecrating the flag, with the vandals bending the flagpole in an apparent act of vehement destruction.
The incident reportedly took place around 4:50 a.m. on Saturday. A key detail has emerged from their initial investigations into the crime, the presence of an individual characterized by his facial hair, driving a grey Ford F-150 pickup truck, close to the scene at the time. This man is currently a person of interest as the probe continues.
Thus far, the unfolding evidence led the police to believe that the crime was indeed instigated by hate. The deeply disturbing incident has left a black mark on the typically peaceful town of Pictou, stirring up the community to stand in solidarity against acts of hate and intolerance. As investigations continue, it’s highly hoped that justice will soon be served and the perpetrator held accountable for such an unacceptable act.
