Prince Harry and his wife Meghan concluded their visit to Colombia on Sunday by engaging in a forum that addressed the challenges faced by women of African descent in politics. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also took part in a vibrant traditional music festival in the coastal city of Cali, where they interacted with young people.
This visit, which began Thursday, was at the invitation of Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez, the nation’s first Black vice president. Aligned with their advocacy for cultural and social issues through the Archewell Foundation, the couple’s trip has been marked by significant community engagements.
On Sunday, amid the rhythmic beats of drums, the soulful notes of saxophones and marimbas, and the resonant power of poetry, Harry and Meghan sat front and center at the “Afro Women and Power” forum. There, they absorbed the poignant insights of Black leaders.
Visibly moved, the Duchess of Sussex addressed the gathering of Afro-Colombian women and leaders with gratitude, speaking in Spanish—a language she revealed she had learned two decades ago. “I can feel this embrace from Colombia. It is incredible, thank you very much,” she said.
The forum’s discussions were profound, with panelist Ana Granja highlighting the exigent role of leaders in mitigating inequality and poverty within Black communities. She underscored the compounded adversities Black women face in the political arena due to pervasive racism and discrimination. “Our living conditions make us strong, brave women,” remarked Vice President Márquez. She urged the royal couple to bolster financial aid and amplify social programs for women besieged by gender violence and the marginalization of youth.
Vice President Márquez emphasized that the event aspired to restore dignity to ethnic populations and drive initiatives for the betterment of women, children, and adolescents. The previous day saw Harry and Meghan journeying to towns celebrated for their preservation of African heritage, including the community of San Basilio de Palenque in Cartagena, located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. There, they met with local communities and their leaders, enriching their understanding of Colombia’s diverse cultural tapestry.
The couple’s itinerary also featured a forum on digital security in Bogotá, Colombia’s capital. Here, they championed causes close to their hearts, advocating for mental health and combatting cyberbullying among children and teens. Additionally, they visited a school and engaged with military members and veterans profoundly impacted by Colombia’s long-standing internal conflicts.
