In light of impending Guy Fawkes and Diwali celebrations, the fire service is emphasising the importance of exercising caution when handling fireworks due to the potential for conflagrations in the warm and dry conditions expected this weekend.
Adrian Nacey, the Community Education Manager, has noted the mixed weather forecast as an additional reason for individuals to be mindful of conditions prior to igniting any pyrotechnic displays. Historically, both the Guy Fawkes and Diwali festivities have centred around the use of fireworks, with celebrations coinciding this year.
In a recent instance underscoring the potential for mishap, a spectator sustained minor injuries when a firework misfired into the crowd at a Diwali festival in Hastings.
“Nearing summer, the weather is oftentimes windy across New Zealand,” says Mr. Nacey. “Simultaneously, the vegetation in certain regions is drying, thereby magnifying its flammability. As a prerequisite, individuals should verify whether conditions are safe before igniting fireworks.”
Fire and Emergency NZ recommends that the public attend organized fireworks displays rather than carry out their own. However, for those opting to conduct personal firework displays, caution is strongly advised.
Mr. Nacey warns, “Fireworks have been known to cause damage via fires and injuries to the public. So if you decide to participate in this tradition, please handle them with the utmost care.”
Officials are additionally urging the public to abstain from purchasing and hoarding fireworks for future use, especially in consideration of the anticipated El Nino weather conditions. These conditions often lead to elevated temperatures, amplified dryness, and intensifying winds across Aotearoa and could potentially boost fire risks.
“Prior to Guy Fawkes, we advocate against stockpiling fireworks,” says Mr. Nacey. “Given the forthcoming climate circumstances, it is crucial to know the rules of your local region in regards to firework uses. Please ensure to check whether any restrictions have been enforced in your area for the summer.”
In ensuring a safe and enjoyable firework experience, he advises:
- Always check the conditions before lighting fireworks.
- Refrain from reserving fireworks for the summer.
- Prioritize using fireworks in expansive open spaces devoid of flammable material.
- Equip yourself with plentiful water or a hose.
- Orient your fireworks skyward to avoid setting fire to buildings or vegetation.
- Notify your neighborhood of your plans to discharge fireworks, especially those with pets and livestock.
- Dispose of your fireworks consciously by immersing them in water before discarding.
