In an innovative move to address a rising housing issue, Halifax Mayor Mike Savage has announced the plan for a $9.5 million affordable tiny home community in Lower Sackville. Providing an unconventional approach, this concept represents a new initiative for Halifax, one that hasn’t been pursued prior.
The detailed plan includes erecting fifty-two modest houses on the HRM’s surplus land. The earliest residents of the project are expected to settle into the first 30 units as early as the coming summer.
Mayor Savage shared that the idea of tiny homes as a potential solution was presented to the city, and later to the province. Showing a remarkable enthusiasm for the concept, the province signified their support, recognizing the practicality and potential of tiny home communities.
A promising example of its practicality can be seen in Fredericton, where the 12 Neighbours Tiny Home Community stands. Constructed for about $50,000 each, these small yet functional buildings are successfully housing numerous residents.
Parallel to this, home builder Jacqueline Landry aims to introduce the idea of tiny home communities to Cape Breton. Landry, having effortlessly transformed a shed into a tiny house, advocates for these smaller dwellings which would cost well under $30,000 to build. However, she reminds us that the selling price would presumably be higher.
The tiny houses Landry imagines would not be suitable for family living, but she firmly believes they would make the ideal dwelling for single individuals. Landry has taken her innovative proposal to the Eastern District Planning Commission in Port Hawkesbury, pitching a sound plan to build a series of six 600 square-foot homes along the property. She visualizes a safe and affordable community to counteract the housing crisis in the region.
Landry has, in fact, established a new home-building company to accomplish her mission of building a multitude of miniature, affordable homes. She stands confident in her vision’s feasibility and optimism for her ambitious project’s future.
