In response to increasing shoplifting incidences, a Halifax-area grocery store has significantly bolstered its security measures. Gateway Meat Market, co-owned by Tamara McKay, has installed over 50 security cameras in an effort to curb theft and maintain affordable prices for customers amid rising food costs. McKay attributes the uptick in shoplifting to the economic pressures faced by consumers, stating that desperation drives some individuals to such acts. Despite these challenges, the store is committed to keeping prices low and has integrated extensive surveillance systems since opening in 2008. Halifax Regional Police have also noted a surge in retail theft across the region and are actively working to maintain a visible presence in local business districts to deter crime.
