Google Unveils AI-Inclusive Pixel 8: Future of Smartphone With Enhanced Privacy and Innovative Features

The technological titan, Google, recently unveiled the future of smartphones – the highly anticipated Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. These devices will incorporate a substantial increase in artificial intelligence (AI) tool kit, with capabilities extending to image recognition and editing that can even generate photo captions. This strategic progression arises from Google’s intention to integrate AI more fundamentally into our daily lives.

These advances articulated by Google’s senior vice president of devices and services, Rick Osterloh, exemplify Google’s commitment to creating devices that are not just intelligent, but provide a seamless user experience. He further elaborated, describing the new Pixel 8 range as essentially offering ‘AI in your hand’.

The advancements extend to the integration of Google’s AI chatbot, Bard, with Google Assistant. This innovative partnership will help perform tasks more efficiently, intersecting with Google’s extensive range of services including Gmail, Maps, and YouTube, making life easier for the end-user.

Privacy remains paramount with Google allowing users to decide if they wish for Bard to interact with its services, addressing concerns about artificial intelligence’s potential to encounter sensitive information.

One exciting feature is Bard’s ability to generate captions for photos taken on an Android device, providing content suitable for immediate sharing on social media. This exclusive access to Bard-backed Google Assistant will initially only be available to a test audience and then gradually extended to Pixel users on an opt-in basis.

The Pixel 8, and its superior counterpart the Pixel 8 Pro, share similarities with last year’s models, although the eye-catching enhancements are the improved cameras with AI-powered editing tools. These innovative features can amplify image quality, zoom into specific elements, replace faces in group shots and even remove items from pictures.

Google’s firm faith in the new AI features acts as a justification for the augmented price due to inflationary pressures seen in technology over recent years. The current pricing points to $700 for the Pixel 8 and $1,000 for the enhanced Pixel 8 Pro model, reflecting a $100 increase over comparable previous models.

The Pixel 8 Pro also ventures into the health-tech realm with the capability of reading users’ temperatures – a feature timely amidst a world still grappling with a pandemic. Regulatory approval for this feature is still pending in the U.S.

The growing Pixel family has slowly but steadily been carving its niche in the smartphone market dominated by Apple and Samsung. Sales have been gradually growing, with Pixel now owning approximately 4% of the high-end smartphone market, a notable rise from less than 1% just three years ago.

Interestingly, Google isn’t reliant on device sales alone to bolster profits. Its hefty annual revenue of $200 billion, largely courtesy of its indomitable digital ad network, provides ample room for experimental devices. That said, the incorporation of Google’s search engine on popular devices is currently a focal point of an ongoing Washington antitrust trial, where the U.S. Justice Department endeavours to prove misuse of Google’s power to limit competition and innovation.
