Google Halts Chromecast Production, Unveils Premium TV Streamer

Google has announced it is ceasing production of Chromecast devices after more than a decade of selling the popular streaming dongles. In a statement released on Tuesday, the tech giant confirmed that Chromecasts will be available for purchase only while supplies last, although the company will continue to provide software and security updates for its newer models, without specifying which ones.

The most recent addition to the Chromecast lineup was the Chromecast with Google TV, introduced in 2022. Google highlighted the evolution of technology since the original Chromecast debuted in 2013, noting significant investments in integrating Google Cast technology into millions of TV devices, including Android TVs. Google indicated that this step marks a transition to expanding the capabilities of smart TVs built on Chromecast’s foundational technology.

Replacing the Chromecast, Google has introduced the $99.99 Google TV Streamer, set to launch on September 24th. This new set-top box boasts a 22 percent faster processor compared to the Chromecast with Google TV and includes integration with Thread and Matter technologies, signaling a considerable upgrade.

Despite the enhancements, the discontinuation of the Chromecast dongle comes as a disappointment to many. At a price point of just $29.99, the Chromecast with Google TV provided an affordable entry-level option for a comprehensive streaming hub. The new Google TV Streamer, while more advanced, positions itself as a more premium device that could potentially compete with higher-end products like the Apple TV 4K.
