Golden Entertainment Sells Operations for $361M, Eyes Casino Upgrades

Earlier this year in March, Golden Entertainment, a prominent player in the entertainment industry listed under NASDAQ as GDEN, made headlines with its strategic divestiture of distributed gaming operations within the states of Montana and Nevada. The buyer, an established privately-owned entity J&J Ventures Gaming, agreed to take on the operations for a substantial sum. Following regulatory approval by Nevada gaming authorities, the finalized deal stood at $322.5 million, with an additional $39 million anticipated at the close of the transaction.

This significant shift in assets sparked wide speculation regarding the potential investment in Golden Entertainment’s Pahrump-based casino hotels. Aiming to bolster their offerings, executive vice president Blake Sartini II, who has inherited his acumen under the tutelage of Golden CEO and progenitor Blake Sartini, shared with the Nevada Gaming Commission the company’s vision. The proceeds from the recent sale could be a financial springboard, enabling considerable enhancements to their trio of properties within the Pahrump region.

The town of Pahrump, perched roughly 58 miles away from the vibrant Las Vegas Strip, houses three of Golden Entertainment’s notable establishments: the Gold Town Casino, Lakeside Hotel & Casino, and Pahrump Nugget Hotel & Casino. Despite the company’s practice of not disclosing individual performance metrics for these venues in their quarterly publications, the last quarter saw these sites, in conjunction with their two Arizona Charlie’s outposts in the Las Vegas area, generate a combined revenue of $16.87 million.

Progressive enhancements at these Pahrump locations were already underway even before the sale was formally sanctioned. Earlier improvements included the introduction of new culinary experiences at Gold Town Casino, and the illustrious Pahrump Nugget recently celebrated the opening of a Jimmy John’s franchise. These venues stand among the town’s diverse attractions, including a slice of Death Valley National Park, Spring Mountains, and the historic locale of Mt. Charleston. Pahrump, a crucible of entertainment and leisure nestled in Nye County and bordering California, is also known for its legal brothels, a unique facet of its local color.

The windfall from the sale is unlikely to be singularly allocated to these Pahrump developments. The company’s brass made it known to regulatory figures that investments are also slated for other properties, such as the Strat Hotel, the Arizona Charlie’s venues, and Laughlin resort casinos like the Aquarius and the Edgewater. While these have been their focus, internal discussions suggest that a portion of the capital might also be channeled into shareholder incentives – following the precedent set earlier in the year with a special dividend and an augmentation to an existing share repurchase arrangement, a strategy partly thankful to the proceeds from a former Maryland casino hotel under their wing.
