A novel initiative that establishes symbiotic living arrangements is offering cost-effective housing solutions in Barrie. Georgian College has partnered with SpacesShared, offering an innovative program that connects seniors with spare rooms and students in need of affordable housing.

Describing the program as ‘incredible’, Suzie Addison-Toor, Vice President of Student Success at Georgian College, explained the initiative’s benefits. Beyond providing affordable housing, the program also reduces social isolation for everyone involved, enriching the community’s social fabric.

Karen Tiveron, a homeowner participating in the program, found value in it beyond monetary relief. Living alone with a disability, Tiveron noted the program provided much-needed assistance with simple tasks around the house, from taking out the trash to participating in minor housework.

Tiveron found companionship and support in her match, Parth Makwana. Having moved from India in September the previous year for his culinary management studies, Makwana was enthusiastic about experiencing local life firsthand. He was introduced to SpacesShared through a Georgian College Instagram promotion and didn’t hesitate to engage.

Living cohabitally has been a positive experience for both Tiveron and Makwana. From getting guidance for administrative tasks like applying for his license or constructive help to spruce up his resume, Makwana finds his host’s experience invaluable. Tiveron, in turn, relishes the opportunity to gain insight into Makwana’s unique cultural background.

Georgian College officials expressed their satisfaction with the program’s results, as they actively solicit further homeowner participation. This shared living arrangement unlocks a new innovative pathway to housing solutions, bridging the gap between generations while enhancing the community’s living experiences.
