As of yet, the vast extent of harm deployed by the unseasonably freezing conditions remains unfathomable, but fears of a possible existential blow to the wine industry are rippling through the viticultural community. However, French grape growers are known to have faced and triumphed over such adversities in the past.
At the very core, the devastation seeks to disrupt this cherished French tradition, affecting the virility of raw materials – the tender grape buds, and thereby the subsequent production of wines including the upscale Chablis, whose grapes primarily populate the stricken areas.
Farmers throughout Burgundy, a region celebrated for its velvety Pinot noir and resplendent Chardonnay – the varieties that compose the quintessence of Chablis, too, are holding their breath as they estimate the losses.
