Former poker player, Joran van der Sloot, has acknowledged his role in the murder of American, Natalee Holloway, in Aruba during the year of 2005. In addition to this admittance, van der Sloot professed that he attempted to embezzle a grand total of $250,000 from the bereaved mother of the victim.
van der Sloot, originally from the Netherlands, was extradited from Peru to the United States in May. This extraction was set in motion so that he could stand against federal allegations of extortion and wire fraud. Currently, van der Sloot is facing a 28-year sentence in Peru for his involvement in the homicide of yet another woman namely, Stephany Flores.
In the year 2010, van der Sloot demanded a quarter of a million dollars from Beth Holloway, the mother of Natalee Holloway, promising to reveal the whereabouts of her daughter’s hidden body. Unfortunately, the information he provided was fraudulent. Beth Holloway initially paid van der Sloot an advance of $25,000, which he pocketed despite his deceit.
His confession became part of a plea agreement that pledged a 20-year sentence for the extortion charges, which will run concurrently with his Peruvian sentence. As a result of this agreement, it’s unlikely that van der Sloot will face prison time in the U.S. His latest sentence will be served in Peru since the U.S. holds no jurisdiction over the Aruban case. Judicial proceedings in Aruba are also prevented due to expired statute limitations.
Even with these legal entanglements, Beth Holloway found closure after a grueling 18 years of uncertainty. Van der Sloot, the last person to see Holloway alive, has been arrested twice before but never charged due to lack of physical evidence.
Van der Sloot’s confession disclosed that he met Holloway at a beach and upon her rejection of his sexual advances, brutally killed her. This confession has thus put an end to numerous speculative crime documentaries, books, and podcasts revolving around the case.
During the court proceedings, van der Sloot expressed remorse to the Holloway family and his own. His appearance was notably shaken and weathered, a stark contrast to his once youthful charm.
Beth Holloway, in her impactful statement to van der Sloot, candidly pointed out his dreadful condition. The presiding judge, Anna M. Manasco, took this confession into account during sentencing and reprimanded van der Sloot for his brutally murderous actions.
