Continuing negotiations between Unifor and Ford Motor Co. have forced a 24-hour extension of a potential strike deadline. The delay follows what the union has described as a “substantive offer” presented by Ford, leading to the compromise of pushing back the initially scheduled deadline.
Despite this progress, the union is keeping its members on alert, reinforcing the need to maintain strike readiness until a final agreement is reached.
Unifor remains engaged in earnest discussions with Ford, seeking to conclude a pattern agreement that will serve as a foundational model for contracts at other major automotive manufacturers, General Motors and Stellantis included.
Ford, in reciprocation, expressed its commitment to work collaboratively with Unifor. The automaker pledged to support the formulation of a blueprint that ensures a strong and sustainable future for the automotive industry in Canada.
Emphasizing its advocacy for its labor force, Unifor spelled out its negotiation bible – an increase in wages, enhancements in pension benefits, and the enshrinement of quality jobs. This comes in response to an automotive future anticipated to be heavily influenced by the uprising of electric vehicles.
