In a surprising turn of events, celebrated forward Addin Fonua-Blake’s fate had a volte-face as his foreseeable future remains tethered to the Warriors despite his intended exit announcement on Thursday.
Fonua-Blake, who has three more years in his existing contract, expressed a wish to the management to return to Sydney, citing personal reasons.
Various clubs started running estimations to squeeze in the Dally M Prop of the Year under their respective salary caps. However, following a strategic conciliation on Thursday night between Fonua-Blake and the Warriors, things simmered down. The renowned player confirmed he will be in New Zealand with the Warriors for at least another year.
“My decision to request this shift solely lies on family grounds,” clarified Fonua-Blake, “And I would like to assure all Warriors’ admirers that I am wholeheartedly committed to launching into the season of 2024. I am eager to return to training with my peers with the aspiration of outdoing our past performance in the upcoming season.”
At 27, Fonua-Blake holds a pivotal position in the Warriors, being instrumental in their return to the finals this season. His play restored the public’s affections for the club in New Zealand – a testament to his importance to the team.
Despite being the top-earning prop forward in the NRL during the last season, several clubs are believed to be considering making offers, the Dragons’ coach Shane Flanagan, being one of them, due to Fonua-Blake’s past association with the Red V.
The Bulldogs too have shown interest but will have to defer their plans by a year considering Fonua-Blake’s recent commitment to the Warriors.
The Tongan player closed an impressive 2023 season, scaling the most running metres among front-rowers. He also reportedly scored nine tries and made 35 offloads, marking his best season since his crossover from the Sea Eagles.
