An impending disaster at Creekside High School in north Florida was averted by the timely intervention of authorities who recently detained three teenagers. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office was tipped off by ominous text messages that highlighted two lists seeking to harm multiple students at the high school.

The adolescents in question devised two lists: one was a hit list targeted at students they wished to inflict physical harm upon, and another, sinisterly dubbed as a “lethal hit list,” consisted of students they planned on killing. These text messages further contained chilling imagery comprising of circled faces of the intended targets, soaring views of the high school premises, and an assortment of firearms they planned to deploy.

The school, situated in St. Johns, lies only 25 miles south of Jacksonville. A fellow student, privy to the machinations, tipped off the law enforcement thereby exposing the deadly scheme. Claiming widespread bullying as the reason behind their unity, the arrest reports suggest that these troubled teens even attempted to rope in others. The reports, however, did not confirm whether the accused had access to firearms, although, plans of employing an AK-47 were unearthed through the exchange of text messages.

The swift collaboration between St. Johns County Schools district and the local authorities was highly appreciated by Superintendent Tim Forson. As a result of this incident, he stated that the school would be introducing penalties, that might range from expulsions to shifting the offenders to an alternate school. Barring the release of the accused ages 14 and 15, due to their underage status, the charges they face are that of creating written threats to murder or cause physical harm along with unlawful usage of a two-way communication device.

Making a statement on the department’s social media page, Sheriff Rob Hardwick expressed his unwavering commitment to protect the local youth, reiterating his concern for the safety of the county’s over 50,000 school-going children. He applauded the swift response of the youth services deputies for having preempted the catastrophe.

This timely intervention on the part of the authorities comes in light of an increasing number of school shootings across the nation. As of October 3, a total of 58 school shootings have taken place throughout the country. Furthermore, reports from the National Center for Education Statistics reveal that fatalities due to school shootings have doubled in the academic year 2021-22 in comparison to its precursor.
