In a tragic incident transpiring on a Monday morning in Midtown Toronto, an elderly lady was killed upon being hit by a right-turning dump truck. At about 10:30 a.m., the victim was maneuvering a walker to safely traverse from the southwest corner of Mount Pleasant Road to the eastern side of the lane, when the horrifying incident unfolded. The truck in question was traveling eastward and preparing for a southward turn, as per the account presented by the police.
The heavy vehicle had maintained a halt for the duration of the red light, resuming its journey when traffic signal transitioned to green. Following this fatal collision, first respondents from the paramedic team pronounced the woman deceased on scene. “This investigation necessitates a considerable scale of police operation due to its intricate nature and the unfortunate loss of a life,” stated Inspector Jeff Bangild, as he addressed the gravity of the incident.
The driver involved managed to halt at the scene of accident, extending full cooperation towards the ongoing investigation. According to Inspector Bangild, preliminary evidences suggest the lady possessed the green light when she attempted to cross the road. The investigative team from Traffic Services, tasked with reconstructing the incident, is looking at potential subsequent charges.
The identity of the unfortunate victim remains undisclosed until now. The intersection witnessed an interruption of traffic movement, demarcated by yellow police tape, as official investigation proceeded and the dump truck was still present on scene.
A passerby offered his observation of the location to the CP24, highlighting frequent instances of speed limits being bypassed and describing the said intersection as “disastrous.” He expressed a grim inevitability about such an incident occurring, i.e., “sooner or later” while failing to ascertain whether the truck was exceeding prescribed speed limit during the incident.
Inspector Bangild affirmed rigorous investigation into the collision, with special emphasis on speed as a credible factor. The police department has sought public assistance for furthering the probe into this incident, particularly seeking eyewitness accounts. Inspector Bangild reiterated, “For anyone who bore witness to this tragic event, despite its potential severity and gruesome nature, may aid by examining any available camera footage and support our investigative efforts. Any form of assistance could significantly improve the resolution pertaining to the incident.”
For a considerable span, traffic flow will remain ineffective as the police investigation into the fatal incident ensues. It is provisionally estimated that the closure shall be maintained for several hours.
