Edmonton Unveils Largest River Valley Park in City’s History

Sunday witnessed the highly anticipated launch of Edmonton’s newest and largest river valley park, nestled in Ward Dene, around the region of 149 Avenue and 17 Street. The grandeur of the park is impressive, spanning over 190 acres, easily making it the most extensive park in the history of Edmonton.

Designed thoughtfully, the park aims to amalgamate popular river valley trails with an array of amenities. These include an event centre, a dedicated playground, public washrooms, and a striking ornamental lake that is sure to enthral enthusiasts of non-motorized boating activities.

The park’s large-scale development has elicited excitement among local communities. Ward Dene Coun. Aaron Paquette expressed his enthusiasm, “It is incredibly exciting to have a park of this stature in the northeast. It’s already being remarkably well-utilised by families and I envisage it bringing joy to generations to come.”

The recently inaugurated park is a crucial part of the Ribbon of Green plan, a strategy the city has undertaken to create an interlinked river valley to cater to the environmental needs and recreational pursuits of Edmontonians.

Addressing the gathering at the opening, Mayor Amarjeet Sohi accentuated the importance of the river valley amidst robust civic life. “The river valley area has been witnessing erosion,” he noted, ” We need to persistently invest in its expansion to preserve the jewel that it is.”

Originally planned for an August opening, city officials prudently postponed it to accommodate the nesting season for migratory birds in the region.

The park, despite its inaugural celebration, is yet to be officially christened. City officials have planned to engage with stakeholders and residents later in the fall to decide on the park’s official naming and discuss other long-term plans for its development.

While the greater Edmonton river valley is home to more than 20 major parks and 160 kilometres of meticulously maintained trails, it is also a short hop, skip and a jump away from other exciting urban amenities.
