Montreal police say this is the 18th homicide this year.

At around 7:30 in the evening, police say they got a 911 call informing them that shots had gone off at a resident close to the Michelet St. and Jean-Talon.

When officers got to the address, they found a body in the garage, police spokesperson says. Police declare him dead on scene.

Local police said the victim was a member of organized crime units. His first offence involved cocaine-trafficking dating back to 1991.

The other offence was uncovered in 2010 and it involved drug trafficking between Montreal and Colombia.

The day before Arena was killed, mayors of various cities unified their stand against gun control. The liberal government has come under fire for its policy relating to gun violence.

A bill that was tabled last February propose gun management be the responsibility of municipalities, which sparked an uproar among gun control advocates and city officials.
