It was back to school and back to reality for many John Abbott College (JAC) students this week. New classes, fresh books and the smell of summer still nipping in the air.
Support was on hand from Desjardins for those who needed some financial guidance as they take on their new school session. Offering tools to manage their finances responsibly was a big theme at the table set up on August 23 and 24 this year.
A viable solution to a common problem for young people starting out is having their pay cheque frozen after deposit.
“Directly depositing your pay to prevent funds from being frozen will give students access to their money more quickly,” explained Desjardins’ Youth Development Counsellor, Larise Balcon.
Another tool that could prove useful to students is Desjardins’ budget management tool available to members who can easily connect online for the service. Giving youth a more accurate picture of their income and expenses.
According to Balcon, many students need home and car insurance when they set out for college. Although Desjardins offers these products at student rates, often if the student’s parents are insured with Desjardins they may be eligible under their policy.
