David Walliams Launches Legal Battle with Britain’s Got Talent Creators

David Edward Williams, more commonly known as David Walliams, has engaged in a legal battle with FremantleMedia, the production giant that brings to life the popular talent show, ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. The case, filed in the High Court, pertains to issues associated with data protection. However, the specifics of his claims are yet to be disclosed.

Walliams, a famed actor, comedian, and author, graced the panel of Britain’s Got Talent as a beloved judge from 2012 until 2022. His tenure, however, was marked by controversy. In November of last year, he openly confessed to having made “disrespectful comments” about two contestants during the filming period in 2020, comments he fervently described were only intended for private, and not public, consumption.

According to a report by The Guardian, a leaked script confirmed Walliams’ remarks. The comments, deemed derogatory and sexually explicit, were audibly captured during a recording session of an episode in January 2020. Walliams expressed regret in a statement, stating that these were private conversations not meant for public ears and apologized for any offence caused.

Thames TV, a division of FremantleMedia, also condemned the inappropriate language employed by Walliams, despite acknowledging the private nature of the comments. The production house, one of the country’s largest, not only operates Britain’s Got Talent but also a slew of other television staples, such as Family Fortunes, QI, and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

Despite this controversy, Walliams’ star continues to rise in the entertainment industry. The former judge gained popularity through the BBC comedy Little Britain, alongside Matt Lucas. During his ten-year stint on Britain’s Got Talent, he was recognized as the best judge at the National Television Awards in 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Besides his TV work, he has achieved recognition as a best-selling author, with books like Gangsta Granny and The Boy in the Dress to his credit.

FremantleMedia’s plans for the 2023 series of Britain’s Got Talent include recruiting former Strictly Come Dancing judge, Bruno Tonioli, presumably as Walliams’ replacement. Meanwhile, Walliams holds firm as one of the nation’s most successful entertainers.
