Dark Alliances and Virtual Meetings: The Unseen Threat Haunting Pickering’s Council

27

A local council just east of Toronto is transitioning all meetings online, blaming what they describe as “increasingly hostile threats” linked to a controversial councillor as the catalyst for this change. The City of Pickering’s mayor and council claim ongoing disruptions by Ward 1 Coun. Lisa Robinson, who they allege has alt-right affiliations, have prompted this decision.

Over the past year, Robinson has faced sanctions, including a nine-month pay docking, following three integrity investigations indicating misconduct. Amidst her denials, Robinson filed for judicial review, arguing a conspiracy led by the mayor targets her unfairly.

The council plans to maintain an online format for its sessions, as highlighted in a recent 13-minute video they posted. The video outlines supposed interactions between Robinson and alt-right figures, detailing meetings and her controversial media appearances.

Mayor Kevin Ashe articulated concerns of ideological infiltration affecting council operations, announcing the shift to virtual platforms, a method previously utilized during pandemic restrictions. Ashe emphasized that council would not resume in-person gatherings until safety assessments were completed.

Robinson responded to the accusations with her own video, dismissing them as “hilarious propaganda” and accusing Ashe and the council of using “bullying tactics” against dissenters.

In a broader context, this shift in Pickering unfolds as Ontario’s government explores legislative measures allowing municipalities to remove councillors for significant code of conduct violations. Although the bill is still pending, it could establish uniform conduct standards across municipalities, potentially resulting in removal for serious breaches if recommended by integrity officials and supported unanimously by council members, excluding the offending party.

Throughout the turmoil, Mayor Ashe has vocalized support for stricter penalties, including the possibility of removal, for council members infringing on ethical standards.
