Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has made headlines by adopting Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus that gained internet fame, through a substantial donation. The Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand announced that Buterin contributed 10 million Thai Baht, equivalent to approximately 88 Ether or $292,000, as part of their Wildlife Sponsorship Program. Moo Deng’s charming personality and social media presence have captivated many, leading to her viral status since September 2024.
Buterin expressed his enthusiasm in taking on the role of Moo Deng’s adoptive father, expressing his commitment to support her development over the next two years. He hinted at potentially increasing his donation beyond the initial amount. This gesture is in line with Buterin’s ongoing philanthropic efforts within the cryptocurrency community, often utilizing crypto donations, including memecoins, for charity.
Moo Deng’s popularity also sparked the creation of a Solana-based memecoin named after her. One investor achieved a remarkable profit by transforming an initial $1,300 investment into $3.4 million. However, the memecoin’s value later plummeted by nearly 60% from its peak, highlighting the volatility of memecoin trading. Despite its initial success, the majority of traders faced losses or minimal gains.
Buterin’s charitable initiative with Moo Deng is the latest in his series of notable philanthropic actions within the Ethereum community and beyond.
