Cryptic Hippo Craze: Why Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin Invested Heavily in the Viral Moo Deng Amidst Memecoin Turmoil

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has adopted Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus that gained fame as an internet sensation. Announced by Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Buterin contributed 10 million THB, equivalent to 88 Ether or approximately $292,000, to the zoo’s Wildlife Sponsorship Program. This decision reflects Buterin’s long-standing engagement in charitable activities within the crypto community.

As the adoptive father, Buterin expressed enthusiasm for supporting Moo Deng, suggesting the possibility of further contributions as she matures over the next two years. The zoo celebrated the partnership in a public statement, looking forward to collaborative efforts.

Moo Deng’s social media presence brought her widespread popularity in September 2024, leading to the creation of a Solana-based memecoin inspired by the hippo. Some traders found early financial success with the token, which experienced a significant rise before a subsequent 60% drop from its peak valuation.

One investor notably transformed an initial $1,300 into $3.4 million, amid concerns from the community about potential insider trading. Data reveals that the overwhelming majority of traders on Solana’s memecoin launchpad incurred losses or minimal gains. Despite the risks associated with such investments, stories like Moo Deng’s continue to captivate and engage global audiences.
