Crombie Steps Down as Mississauga Mayor Amid Ontario Liberal Leadership Bid

Bonnie Crombie has decided to temporarily step away from her duties as the Mayor of Mississauga, affirmed a representative from her campaign. The decision comes amidst Crombie’s ongoing bid for the leadership position of the Ontario Liberal party, however, the individual who will be stepping into Crombie’s mayoral shoes during her leave remains undetermined.

Crombie announced her intent to vie for the summit of the Ontario Liberals back in June, confidently asserting she possessed the key combination of experience and vitality to challenge Premier Doug Ford in the upcoming provincial election, which is expected to take place in the spring season of 2026.

Her campaign announcement was received by an Ontario Liberal party that has been bereft of a permanent leader since 2022. The void was created when Stephen Del Duca stepped down from his leadership role following a defeat in the provincial election. As a temporary arrangement, John Fraser has been donning the mantle of interim leader from August 2022.

The party is set to choose a new leader through a voting process slated for the 25th and 26th of November, with results expected to be unveiled around a week later, on December 2. Joining Crombie in the race for the coveted leadership position are Liberal MPs Yasir Naqvi of Ottawa Centre and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith of Beaches-East York, along with Liberal MPPs Ted Hsu of Kingston-and-the-Islands and Adil Shamji of Don Valley East.
