Following a parole violation last month in Elliot Lake, a previously convicted sex offender, James Wickenden, known also as Jay Sloychuk, aged 40, now grapples with 22 fresh charges. Predominantly, these charges involve seven instances of sexual assault of a minor under the age of 16, seven instances of sexual interference, and eight counts of neglecting to abide by a child prohibition order.
These accusations compound upon charges asserted on the 21st of September, which encompassed voyeurism and instances of Wickenden being in proximity to children.
The Ontario Provincial Police were prodded into action after receiving reports suggesting that Wickenden was operating as a contractor in Elliot Lake, often frequenting places where children were present. It was noted that due to his prior convictions, he was explicitly prohibited from doing so.
In the wake of his appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sault Ste Marie on Thursday, Wickenden has been placed into custody. The authorities have expressed fears that more victims could be at large and urged those with any pertinent information to contact the East Algoma OPP on their dedicated line. Confidentiality and anonymity are assured by the force for any whistle-blowers.
Victims of sexual assault should remember they are not alone. Assistance is readily available via the Victim Services of Algoma website and a toll-free call line. For those experiencing extreme difficulty, the crisis service is only a dial of 911 away.
