In 1984, founder of  West Island College and served as Director General for over 30 years Terry Davies founded the program “Class Afloat”; it was created in response the United Nations call to celebrate International Youth Year which challenged schools worldwide to interpret its themes of “Peace, Participation and Development”.

This August, Terry sets sail with another vessel and as the leader of a new program, A+ Academy. The new program, aboard the Norwegian icon, S.S. Sorlandet, differentiates itself from the former by virtue of a two year itinerary and a breath- taking circumnavigation.

Students are drawn from more than 20 countries worldwide and will be involved in absolutely unique field studies. Imagine the anthropological lessons on Easter Island, diving on the Great barrier reef or working on a tea plantation in Bali. These students will bring their classroom to more than 40 ports of call. The curriculum is inspired by International Baccalaureate structure and is powered by Advanced Placement content.

“I thought I was retired until a new and rather exciting opportunity was presented just one year ago.” Davies told West Island Blog in an interview. “ A+ Academy launches this school year taking Secondary 4, Secondary 5 and CEGEP students on a circumnavigation of the world, stopping in over 40 different countries. Students learn in the most ideal circumstances; students get to interact with hundreds of international counterparts, and discover themselves and the world around them. They will acquire all of the hallmarks of global citizenship. They grow in a shipboard environment as if they were in a greenhouse,” Davies explained.

A+ Academy offers a rigorous pre-university curriculum leading to studies in the Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Business.

Admission requires the successful completion of entry level studies, a commitment to global citizenship, social and behavioural readiness as well as  health and physical readiness.
