Canada’s political factions are being urged to align their stance on India following the Prime Minister’s allusion to a potential connection of the Indian government to the shooting death of a local Sikh leader. The demand comes from the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee and the British Columbia Gurdwaras Council, agencies representing the Canadian Sikh community, who express a need for clear opposition to potential foreign interference related to Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death in June.
The late Mr. Nijjar was killed in Surrey, B.C., just outside the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, which led to an investigation announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on September 18. He stated that Canadian intelligence services were probing possible ties between Indian government and the fatal shooting. India had previously issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Nijjar for his campaigning for an independent Sikh state but emphatically rejected the charges connecting them to his death as “absurd and motivated”.
Prominent political figures in Canada have voiced their opposition to any possible Indian involvement in Nijjar’s death. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre had already posited that Canada “must be united for our home and for each other”, demanding further facts surrounding the case. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, a Sikh himself, has submitted a request for the inclusion of India in the national inquiry probing foreign interference, helmed by Quebec Court of Appeal Justice Marie-Josee Hogue.
