Canadian Government Plans Evacuation of Citizens from Tel Aviv Amidst Escalating Conflict

Plans are underway for the Canadian government to facilitate the departure of Canadians from Tel Aviv amid escalating conflicts in the region. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly released a statement stating that the government intends to utilise Canadian Armed Forces aircraft to assist in this endeavor. The air transport is intended for Canadian citizens and their immediate families, as well as permanent residents, aiming to provide a safe passage amidst the turbulence.

Joly also noted plans for additional options for individuals unable to reach the Tel Aviv airport, a response to the situation caused by the conflict between Hamas, a Canadian-designated terrorist group, and Israel. Thousands have been displaced and stranded, including Canadian citizens, while others have lost their lives.

Canadian travelers are expressing increasing concerns amid compounding challenges. With no available flights and limited embassy support, their relocation has been insurmountable. Mike Safi, a Canadian in Jerusalem, made his predicament clear: “I was expected an arranged exit before things escalate, noting how other nations are airlifting their citizens.”

Joly, after a whirl of public pressure, pledged further details to the 3,234 registered Canadians in Israel and 478 others in Gaza and the West Bank. While empathizing with their plight, she assured them of the government’s full support.

The government encourages Canadians in the region to register, which would enable embassy officials to communicate directly concerning the upcoming flights. Tragically, two Canadians have lost their lives and three others remain unaccounted for.

The Global Affairs Canada (GAC) asserts that the missions in Tel Aviv and Ramallah will remain operational unless security conditions deem otherwise. Officials from Ottawa, Jordan, Egypt, and Lebanon are providing emergency support, aiming to alleviate the worsening humanitarian situation.

The Official Opposition Conservatives urge immediate evacuation flights while lambasting the federal government’s slow response. Conservative MP Michael Chong expressed frustration, noting the absence of swift assistance for desperate Canadians, while other nations like Poland and Brazil have taken action.

NDP MP Heather McPherson also voiced her concerns, emphasizing the essential role of safety and urgent consular support.

With the security of personnel and their families being paramount, the Department of National Defence confirmed that all its members in the region were safe and accounted for. They continue to proactively monitor the situation, ready to adjust operations as necessary.
